Original pencil and brown ink drawing on paper by Randolph CALDECOTT of children playing on the beach with their nannies, on the popular beach in Trouville-sur-Mer (Normandy, France) published in The Graphic (October 1879).   Measures 5 x 10 inches. Matted and framed.
Randolph Caldecott [1846 – 1886] was an English illustrator, painter and sculptor. He attended the Manchester School of Art (1867-1871) and briefly the Slade School of Fine Art (1872). He became a successful magazine contributor, but best remembered for his set of 16 nursery picture books for Children (published two together each Christmas 1878-1885).  Because of his ill health, he traveled constantly seeking medical relief in Germany and the Alps – and produced numerous books from these journeys.  He died in St. Augustine, Florida after being taken ill during a cold February winter.
Caldecott’s name will forever be attached to the annual award that bears his name, given as the “Most Distinguished American Picture Book for Children” by the American Library Association.
