VAN ALLSBURG (Chris):
‘Now Remember,’ Mother said, ‘your father and I are bringing some guests by after the opera, so keep the house neat’
Original conté pencil drawing for the first illustration to this Caldecott-medal wining children’s book, signed and dated (“1980”) by the artist.
Measures 15 1/2 x 17 inches, on larger Strathmore vellum paper.
Spectacularly detailed drawing of Judy & Peter innocently playing at home, before they begin the game of Jumanji. As with many of the artist’s finest images, it incorporates an odd visual perspective conjured to add mystery and suspense. Jumanji, written and illustrated by Van Allsburg, was published by Houghton Mifflin in 1981. It was only his second book, but won the first of his two Caldecott medals (The Polar Express, in 1986).
Our design appears as the first full-page illustrations (p[5]), as well as the design used on the poster first advertising this book.
